St Erth Parish Council is exploring the possibility of creating a Community Orchard on the grassed area at the top end of Vicarage Gate, to be cared for and managed entirely by volunteers from the Parish.
The final planting scheme would be decided by the volunteers involved but could include a mix of fruit trees such as apples, pears, plums, medlar, quince or cherries, together with areas of wildflower meadow. There is also the potential for future additions such as a rainwater harvesting system and picnic benches.
Trees and related equipment are available via a grant from the Forest for Cornwall Community Fund, which is currently open for applications.
Before any plans can progress, however, we need to establish whether there is a strong group of volunteers willing not only to help plant and care for the orchard, but also people who are willing take a lead in organising the group.
We are therefore asking people to register their interest now, so that we can first see if the proposal is a viable one, and, if so, move quickly to establish the group and beginning planning for the orchard’s future care and management.
