Update on Footpaths 111/7/2 & 112/52/4

September 11th 2020

Ritchie Tassell and Colin Bayes, from the Countryside Team for Cormac, attended the recent Parish Council meeting this week, at our invitation, to provide a further update in relation to the two footpaths that run along the river at Carbis Mill, between St Erth and Relubbus. Unfortunately, there are issues that have been raised by the Environment Agency (EA) in relation to environmental impact assessments and as a result work cannot be carried out as originally hoped by October. The EA will not allow any work to take place during the fish spawning season which runs from 1st October to April next year. In addition, the EA are letting the river meander and create its own course, with no intervention, regardless of the effect this may have on the footpaths. Public safety is the highest priority for Cornwall Council and the bank is deteriorating. Indeed, Ritchie anticipates the Carbis Mill section will deteriorate further this winter as a result of ongoing and rapid bank erosion. He is currently carrying out a feasibility study on an alternative route that will be several meters above the floodplain and will be passing on details of this proposal to the Parish Council. Once we have these details we will share them with the public. We realise that this is not the news people wanted to hear, but be assured we will keep working with the Countryside Team to try and secure a sustainable route to walk between St Erth and Relubbus.
